2 Top Tips for Achieving Any Personal Goal, Career Goal or Business Goal

It’s tempting to think that because the New Year has happened, that the new you, new career or new business goals will happen too. More than any other time of the year, it feels like the opportunity for a fresh start and a positive beginning.

Yet research shows that those New Year Goals rarely happen. So, why is it so difficult for us to make those new personal goals, career goals or business goals happen and how can we make sure that our lives are more rewarding in 2016?

In this email I’ve got 2 more tips for you that will help you achieve more in 2016. For the previous 5 tips, check out my blog.

Recently, I saw this quotation which sums up the reality. “What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year.” Vern McLellan.

  1. So...was your obstacle that you did the same old thing and expected a different result? For example:
  • Did you fill up your life with old activities, relationships, tasks, habits and thoughts etc. and leave very little room for the new and no time to work towards your goals? Remember, what got you to here won’t get you to there.
  • What new actions, activities, thoughts and ways of relating do you need in order to get where you want to go in 2016?
  • For instance, do you need to stop procrastinating, becoming discouraged/depressed, comfort eating, wasting time, fire-fighting, doubting, arguing, giving up, and doing other things that don’t work for you?
  • Do you need to start learning better ways to get to your goals, growing, looking after yourself better, asking curious questions, working smarter rather than harder, promoting yourself better, finding more positive people to mix with, thinking outside the box, etc.?
  1. Was your obstacle that you didn’t have someone to hold you accountable?
    • Promises to ourselves are easy to break…and New Year Resolutions are the easiest to give up on for all the reasons we’ve talked about over the last 3 weeks.  
    • It’s easier to keep to our goals if we commit to them publicly by telling our coach, friends, colleagues, clients and family members what we’re going to do.
    • Change can be difficult and so you are more likely to succeed with a life coach and/or business coach because a coach is skilled at helping you:

                                          i.    stay on track in a supportive way and determined way

                                         ii.    overcome obstacles

                                        iii.    make life easier and more exciting and

                                        iv.    develop new skills, resources and attitudes that make you more successful

7 Top Tips for Achieving Any Personal Goal, Career Goal or Business Goal

I saw this quotation recently: “I would say happy New Year but it's not happy; it's exactly the same as last year except but colder.”  Robert Clark

So, why was it so difficult for to make that new personal, career or business life happen in 2015 and achieve your goals? How can you make sure the New Year is better, that you achieve your goals in 2016 and that your life is more fun and rewarding?

Last month (in tip #141) I shared to 2 of the 7 obstacles to creating the new you, new career or new business goals you might have encountered in 2015 and 2 ways to overcome them and achieve your goals in 2016.

Here are 3 more:

  1. You made the same old things important, e.g.:

Human beings like staying in their comfort zone.

As Craig Lounsbrough says, “We desire an exciting future, but the demand for familiar and comfortable tempers our steps to the point that often our steps are little more than stepping in the same place.”

This can happen even if we feel that comfort zone is actually uncomfortable. For instance:

  • You may stick in the same old job with the same difficult colleagues or boring tasks because it’s ‘better the devil you know’. Maybe you’re worried that you’ll jump from the frying pan to the fire and the change won’t be any better than you already have.
  • You may be settling for an uncomfortable kind of harmony rather than having the difficult conversation with your employee, partner, family member, client or friend.
  • You may just be making yourself too busy to get your head round taking a step into the unknown. When we’re busy we tend to fall back on our ‘default modes’…the things we’re used to doing.

If you want changes in your life, start making curiosity, learning and adventure more important than staying in your comfort zone when setting, and taking action towards, your goals in the New Year.

  1. You didn’t have the skills and knowledge you needed

Set yourself up for success by getting the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in achieving your goals in the New Year. For instance, to achieve your goals, do you need to know more about:

  • Dealing with difficult people?
  • Marketing and selling yourself, your business or your ideas?
  • Presenting?
  • Mastering your emotions – anger, stress, confidence etc.?
  • Managing your money?
  • Getting clear about what you want and how to get it?
  • ?

Find out if your employer will invest in coaching and training to help you plug some of the gaps and if they won’t… invest in coaching and training for yourself.

Clients I have been working with have often received a 100% - 400% and more return on the money they have invested in their coaching because of salary raises, better jobs and higher profits they’ve achieved in their career or business. And…their increased confidence and greater ability to create brilliant relationships has been priceless.

  1. You were surrounded by the wrong people

They say that our wealth, and the quality of our lives, is the average of the 5 people we spend most time with. At the same time negative and discouraging people can put a drag on our personal, career and business development. So…

  1. Surround yourself with people who are encouraging, creative, positive, adventurous, open-minded and mature and who have a ‘can do’ attitude. These are the kinds of people who will help you achieve your goals in the New Year.

Many people I talk to can’t believe how quickly this year has flown by.

When I ask them how they feel about that, the ones I’ve been working with say they’re amazed and proud of what they’ve managed to achieve in their personal, career or business lives.

Some of the ones I haven’t been working with feel disappointed, stressed frustrated or worried because:

  • They’re still scrambling on the hamster wheel of life
  • Or this year they’ve been stuck in the same old rut
  • Or things look like they’ve changed for the worse
  • Or they heard the crash of their broken New Year Resolutions in the first few weeks of the year
  • Or…?

Maybe you can relate to one of those situations ?
So why is it so difficult for us to make that new personal, career or business life happen and how can we make sure that our lives are more rewarding next year?

In the next 3 success tips, I’m going to share with you 7 obstacles that might have got in your way this year and 7 secrets to overcoming them next year.

It’s difficult to create a better year in your personal, career and business life if:

  1. You don’t have SMARTER goals

Goals give your life energy, clarity, direction and power.

Your goals have more power when they are written down and they are:

S = Specific – Say what you want and avoid saying what you don’t want. It’s strange but true that your mind is wired to help you get what you want.

If you say what you don’t want, it gets you that too, because it doesn’t understand ‘not’.

I’ll prove it to you. Notice what comes into your mind when I say, ‘Don’t think of a pair of sunglasses!’

Anger Management for Building Confidence: Confidence Tip 140

Life Coaching and Confidence CoachingIt seems like emojis are taking over our lives.More and more I’m reading emails, text messages, Facebook posts with strategically placed emojis…smiley faces usually.Heck, people are even WEARING emojis. I’ve seen countless t-shirts, pyjamas and even pants with those yellow smiley faces on in the shops.

Perhaps just the sight of a happy emoji can lift our mood? 

We’re all using these iOS and Android icons to express ourselves. The “crying with laughter” emoji has even been named – by Oxford Dictionaries – as Word of the Year.

It was, apparently, the most widely used emoji in the world this year, accounting for 20% of all emoji use. That’s a lot of crying with laughter – maybe we live in a happier and more resilient world than we realise.

But, this use of emojis got me thinking. Whereas as an emoji is great for expressing a positive emotion, what about negative ones like anger? 

Seems to me like we need more communication units to express anger. And…more tools if we want to manage our anger well.

Many people lack the confidence to express their anger for fear of making things worse. They sometimes bottle it up until they can’t keep their anger in any longer and their anger comes out explosively...often at an innocent person! That often results in just the sort of negative consequences they feared. This experience confirms their belief that it’s not wise to express anger.

So, how can we manage and express our anger constructively? Here are 7 top tips:

  1. Check whether the person you really need to be angry with is yourself – and then deal with your part in an issue. For instance:
    1. Is the reason your team member didn’t do the task well because you gave unclear instructions or an unachievable goal?
    2. Do you get lumbered with lots to do because you haven’t learned to say ‘No’ assertively?
    3. Is one of the reasons that friend is always late because you’ve never said that being on time is important to you?
  2. Deal with issues you feel angry about sooner rather than later…while you’re still rational. :)
  3. If you’ve got into a very angry state, take time out. Take a step back, get new perspectives and plan what you’re going to say.
  4. Take useful action instead of exploding with anger or bottling up your anger. Negative emotions are there to prompt you to do something constructive. For instance:
    1. If you’re angry about an unfair decision at work, find out more about why the decision has been made and if you can still influence a win-win.
    2. Instead of shouting at the TV at politicians or social injustice, get involved in politics, charity work or…?
    3. If you feel angry about something your partner said or did, find out more about why they did it…sometimes there’s a positive intention behind their unskilled behaviour.
    4. Be willing to explore the truth behind any negative feedback or criticism. What’s useful about that feedback? How can you get the person giving it to also give you a balanced perspective?
  5. Nobody can make you feel anything…even if it seems like they can. So, avoid saying, ‘You make me feel angry!’ Instead you could say something like, ‘When you do ….I feel angry…
  6. Organise your life so that you have time to deal with difficult issues calmly.
  7. Talk to a life coach to help you deal assertively with life’s challenges

Time Management Tips That Will Give You a Super-Productive Week

What was the first thing you did this morning?

It’s a simple question, but one that can – apparently – be a deciding factor in just how successful you are.

This morning for example, I bounded out of bed, meditated for a short while before hitting the gym where I simultaneously checked my emails, read the news and made a plan for where I want to be in the next 5 years.

All before breakfast.

….I joke, of course.

The first thing I did this morning was have a cold shower because my central heating boiler has just packed up…after long a dutiful service I have to say.

Apparently though, if you want to be at the top of your game there are 14 things you should do every morning before breakfast. According to the World Economic Forum, successful people…:
1.        Wake up early
2.        Drink water
3.        Exercise before it falls off the to-do list
4.        Work on a top-priority business project
5.        Work on a personal-passion project
6.        Spend quality time with family
7.        Connect with their spouses
8.        Make their beds
9.        Network over coffee
10.     Meditate to clear their minds
11.     Write down things they’re grateful for
12.     Plan and strategise while they’re fresh
13.     Check their email
14.     Read the news
All before breakfast. You can read their reasons for these activities here:

Now while I think this list is excessive – seriously, you’d have to be up at o’dark thirty to accomplish all of that before breakfast – it’s certainly interesting to think about the habits of the super successful.

I’m sure you’ll find some of the points on this list to be genuinely useful when you want to be successful. Working on a top-priority career/business project, making sure that you move your personal projects forward, connecting in a loving way with your family before you go to work…are great habits of the super successful.

What do you need to do every day in order to grow your business or develop your career or develop yourself personally, so that you can lead the life you truly want?

For me, I find that having the discipline to focus on getting done the one main thing that will move my business forward, every day, really helps me to grow and develop both personally and professionally. Instead of getting distracted by the little things and feeling irritated with myself at the end of the day…that focus gives me a real sense of accomplishment and allows me to happily ‘clock off’ at the end of my working day. So I’m taking the time this week to make sure I do that every day.

What We Can Learn about Motivation and Stress Management from James Bond

With the release of Spectre recently, I was inspired to listen to an audio of the James Bond spy thriller, Casino Royale, last week. I was surprised to hear a great bit of personal development advice about motivation and stress management.

I hasten to add that I wasn’t seeking personal development gems from James Bond at the time. I enjoy thrillers and I was actually curious to see if there were any interesting differences between the books and the films.

So… what did James Bond say?

It was actually Ian Fleming who wrote, “James suddenly knew he was tired. He always acted on this knowledge. It helped him to avoid staleness and the sensual bluntness that led to mistakes.”

Acting on that realisation, James Bond walked away from a high stakes card game and went to rest.

Not quite the action I expected of a high octane spy but definitely wise.

It’s very tempting to spend our energy to the max…and beyond, isn’t it?

But…how many times have you wished that you’d ‘slept on’ or rested before, for example:
•        Making a difficult or expensive decision
•        Taking action to resolve a personal or work dispute
•        Preparing and presenting a work presentation
•        Taking the next step in a high stakes project
•        Turning up for an interview

Adrenalin can be a great energiser and catalyst for creativity but tiredness and stress can cancel that out and leave us feeling burnt out and with tunnel vision and regrets.

Here are 5 ways you can refresh your energy, your creativity and your wisdom, and beat stress, overwhelm and lack of motivation:

1. The common-sense one is to get enough sleep. But…they do say ‘success is the uncommon application of common-sense’. According to some sources, that means 8 hours sleep starting at 10.00 p.m. Why10 p.m.? Because, from that time our body uses energy to repair our cells. If we use that energy for working or playing late, our bodies find it difficult do their repair work. So, if you’ve ever experienced a rush of energy after 10.00 p.m., remember that you’re probably stealing that energy from your health and vitality.

2. Take a break. A few months ago a client told me that it was taking a holiday that had helped her get back to being the confident, fun-loving, adventurous and creative person she enjoyed being. It reminded her of how she used to be. She said that she had come to coaching to help her make sure she kept that version of herself in her daily life.

3. Take a step back from all the draining emotions, time pressure, people pressure and overwork that make your life the hectic experience that it is. Get off the hamster wheel and spend some time each week reflecting ‘on’ your life rather than working ‘in’ it to make sure you are creating the life you really want. What’s your favourite way of reflecting? Talking with a life coach, meditating, going for a long walk or…? “STOP, PAUSE and THINK” as Tim Gale says.

4. Make sure that every day you’re doing something important and not urgent that makes your life better in the long run. You could call these kinds of tasks ‘progress’ tasks. These contrast with the important and urgent fire-fighting and ‘maintenance’ tasks that often fill our day and that keep us on the treadmill of life. For example, in your business, a progress task might be simplifying a process so that it’s easier and takes less time in future. In your career it might be keeping your CV up-to-date and recording your achievements so that you’re ready to take advantage of an opportunity when it comes along.

5. Humour is often a great refresher. I chuckled at this quote recently: “My fake plants died because I did not pretend to water them.” Mitch Hedberg
Apparently one minute of anger depletes the immune system for 6 hours, while one minute of laughter benefits the immune system for 24 hours. Michael McIntyre is one of my favourite comedians. He definitely helps me to see the funny side of life.

 7 Top Stress Management Steps You Can Take to Beat Worry into Submission

Life and Business Coaching for Managers** WARNING – The following news may send shivers up your spine, give you Goosebumps and strike fear into your heart. Whatever you do, try not to scream **

With just over a week to go until Halloween, I’ve just received some pretty frightening news:

According to an article in Metro, the UK is facing a pumpkin shortage.

If you’re planning on carving some creepy creations or warming up with an autumnal pumpkin soup, you may have missed your chance.

If you’re thinking right now, ‘If that’s the worst thing I need to worry about life is pretty good’ you’d probably be right.

What interested me is how obsessed the media is with trying to worry us about everything from the trivial to the really serious stuff worth paying attention to.

Recently I’ve heard:

  • There’s likely to be a Lego shortage at Christmas
  • The government is likely to try to ban cash and banks will charge us for saving our money so we’ll be forced to spend
  • We’re in for the worst winter in 5 years
  • We’re being overwhelmed with refugees and migrants

The list goes on and on.

And it’s not just the media…often we stress and worry each other or ourselves.

The media is only responding to what gets our attention.

The real risks to us is that we over…or under…react. For instance:

  • We put our heads in the sand and hope the dangers will all go away or,
  • We experience ‘worry fatigue’ and become blasé about it all or,
  • We live in a permanent state of stress…feeling as if we have to fire-fight our way through life
  • We have a knee-jerk reaction that makes things worse e.g.

o    We have a difficult month in business and so cut down on marketing or the help we’re getting from a business coach

o    We fear losing our job and burn out working too much over-time in the hope of impressing our employers that we’re vital to the business

  • We waste time, energy or money over-preparing for dangers that will probably never materialise
  • We become too risk-averse and miss out on opportunities
  • Like a drowning person we reject the life belt on offer

I love this quote: “Worry is as useless as a handle on a snowball.”Mitzi Chandler.

But, it isn’t quite true. Worry is just the start of risk analysis and it only becomes useless if it doesn’t lead to proper risk management.

So, how can we keep a level head in the face of all the pressure to worry coming from the media, other people and ourselves? Here are 7 steps:

  1. When you’re worried about something, spend a few moments to taking deep, relaxed breaths to help you calm down
  2. Then ask yourself this curious question: ‘What do I want to happen instead of the thing I’m worried about?’
  3. Answer the question!
  4. When you’re clear about what you want, ask yourself, ‘How can I make what I want to happen…happen?’
  5. Brainstorm some options
  6. Take useful action
  7. Celebrate your results!

Why does this work? Because your brain is like a travel agent. It can’t help you when you’re focussing on what you don’t want. You have to tell it what you do want before it can tap into all your problem solving powers. In just the same way that if you said to a travel agent, ‘I don’t want to go to Cambridge’, the travel agent would have to ask you where you do want to go in order to be able to help you.
