5 Top Persuasion Tips: Confidence Tip 109

Life Coaching and Confidence CoachingHave you noticed that the most successful people in their personal, career and business lives are the people who are good at persuading and getting people to say, ‘Yes’?

Do you find any of these situations frustrating?

  • You’ve got  great ideas but other people are rejecting them
  • You’ve a difficult family member or colleague to manage and they’re  resisting your attempts to get them to change their bad habits
  • You’ve got to get things done but other people are not being team players
  • You’re selling a great product or service but people are not buying them at the prices you want

If you do, this week’s success tip will increase your chances of persuading others to say ‘Yes!’...as long as what you want is also in their best interests.

5 Top Tips for Getting to Yes

You are likely to sabotage your efforts at persuasion if you say:

  • Idea

e.g. We can do X

  • Request

e.g. Please, go and tidy your room.

e.g. Please be at the meeting at 11 a.m.

  • Sale

e.g. Would you like to buy….?

The above comments are weak because there’s no reason or benefit given to the other person for why they should go along with what you want.

There is no guaranteed way to get others to say, ‘Yes!’ every time but you can increase your chances if you follow the Bronze Rule of Persuasion and include benefits that are important to them

e.g.

  • Idea…benefit
  • If we arrive early enough we can eat before we go in to see the film and have a good catch up on each other’s news.
  • If we improve the visual content of the website, we’ll attract more buyers who like good visuals

If you want to be even more persuasive you’ll need to follow the Silver Rule of Persuasion and say benefits first.

This is because people tend to make judgements in nano seconds about whether something is good for them or not and so if you put forward the idea or request first, they may have already made up their minds against it before you get to the benefit.

So say, benefit…request

e.g.

  • We are making changes in the business that affect you. So that you can have your say in how those changes are made, we would like you to attend the meeting at 11 a.m.

But…it doesn’t stop there. You can become super-persuasive if you follow the Golden Rule of Persuasion and combine benefits and choices. This encourages the other person to focus on what way they will agree with you rather than whether they will agree. For instance:

  • We can help you increase your sales by 37% by redesigning your website. (Benefit)What next steps would you like to take? We can either do the whole redesign at once or we could do it in phases, starting with the home page. (Choices)
  • We are making changes in the business that affect you. So that you can have your say in how those changes are made, we would like you to attend the meeting. Would it be better for you to meet at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m.?
  • So that I can help you get your project finished by close of play, I just need five minutes to run through a few questions.Have you got time now, or shall I come back in an hour?”

Wait! There is still a Platinum Rule of Persuasion to follow. When the other person says ‘Yes’ to one of your options, stop talking!

And yes, there’s an even more precious rule of persuasion, the Californium (the most precious metal of all)  Rule of Persuasion and that is…prepare and rehearse your case before you say anything. :)

How to Get Paid More: Confidence Tip 108

Life Coaching and Confidence Coaching There are strategies used by the highest-paid and most successful people anyone can use to get higher rewards for their work.

So if you’re feeling:

  • You’re underpaid by your employer or your clients or
  • Money’s not important to you but you’re struggling with getting on the housing ladder, providing for your retirement or saving for a few luxuries like holidays

Then this week’s success tips will be valuable to you.

If you use them, you’ll put your life, your career or your business on a financial footing that will give you peace of mind, financial freedom, exciting choices and the ability to give back to your community in even more generous ways.

How can you to get paid more?

10 Top Tips to Get Paid More

  1. Have you noticed that what you get paid is often influenced by what you think you deserve? An experiment was done where two adverts for the same job were tested. The only difference was the salary on offer. The advert with the lower salary attracted more applications!

So collect as much evidence as you can to prove to yourself that you are worth paying more. Then you’ll have more confidence to ask for a higher salary or charge higher prices. I remember coaching a person who ran a carpentry business. He was charging customers the same rate he used to get as a jobbing carpenter knocking bits of wood together as he did for his highly skilled craftsmanship. I asked him how long he’d been a carpenter. He said, ‘Ten years.’ Then he realised he was no longer that apprentice who started work 10 years ago but in fact he was a master craftsman and he felt comfortable charging for his skills.

There are some more ideas below to help you prove to yourself and others that you’re worth it.

  1. Find a problem you find easy to solve that others find difficult.I remember reading about a legal firm that had found a simple way to solve a very difficult area of the law. The firm not only captured the market for clients seeking that expertise but also their clients started to ask them to deal with other legal issues because they’d done a really good job. The firm was able to charge higher fees.

Have you got a rare expertise? Look hard because sometimes it’s something you find easy to do so you underestimate the value of your skill.

  1. Look for ways to add value to your clients or your employer. For instance, can you spot ways of working that will get things done in less time and therefore cost less money? Contributing bright ideas makes you more valuable in the eyes of others.
  1. Value your years of experience and training. There’s a story about an engineer who specialised in ship engines. One day a ship in the harbour had a problem with its engine that baffled the engineers. An outside consultant was called in. The consultant examined the engine, tapped in a few places and within 10 minutes the engine sprang to life. The owner was delighted. He had been losing thousands of pounds a day while the ship lay idle. The owner said to the consultant, ‘Send me your invoice.’

The next day the owner was shocked to see a bill for £1000. The owner exclaimed, ‘But you only spent 10 minutes on the job! Send me an itemised bill.’ The next day the owner got a second, itemised, invoice which said, ‘Time spent on the job, £100. Knowing where to tap, £900.’

  1. Which brings me to the next tip. Think about the cost, financial and emotional, of having the problems your clients or employer experiences. For instance, if the problem is lack of sales, are you a great salesperson who brings in far more revenue than it costs to employ you?  There’s a good basis for a higher salary or fees. If you’re not a sales person, there may be other ways you can quantify your value to your customers or employer.
  1. There’s a saying that you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. So improve your negotiation skills.
  1. Keep your skills up-to-date.By doing so, your skills will always be valued in the market and that will give you a competitive edge. Invest in soft skills as well as technical and professional skills. For instance, we often get opportunities because of the high quality of the relationships we have with people in our network, so invest in learning more about networking. People who can get things done through other people (managers) are highly-prized when they know how to manage well.
  1. Go to work in a growing industry rather than a dying industry.
  1. Tell people about your achievements so that they know you’re the ‘go to’ person and they clearly see your value. This is more than about telling people what you’ve done. It’s about talking about the impact and benefits of what you’ve done. Keep your LinkedIn profile and your website up to date, for instance.
  1. Ask for more salary or charge higher prices. If you don’t ask, you don’t give people a chance to say, ‘Yes!’

What’s your next step to get paid better for what you do and create your financial freedom?

Want More Confidence? Then Ban These 4 Words: Confidence Tip 106

Madeleine Morgan Life, Career and Business Coaching, Cambridge UKWhat’s your usual reply when someone asks you, ‘How are you?’

What does that reply do to make your life, relationships, career or business richer and more successful?

If your replies are along the lines of: ‘Okay’, ‘Not bad’ or ‘Fine’, then probably not richer at all. Worse… they may be making you poorer and less successful.

Words that Will Make You Richer and More Successful

Companies that have experimented with banning those 3 responses and replacing those 4 words with more upbeat responses like, “Great! Thank you for asking. How are you?” have experienced a huge uplift in staff morale.

Saying, ‘Thank you for asking’ is a really positive way of rewarding someone for their interest in you.

You may be groaning inwardly at the thought of political correctness gone mad or the fear of not being ‘real’ and true to yourself.

But, before you dismiss the idea consider the even more successful responses below. :)

  1. If those 4 words truly reflect how you feel, maybe you’re forgetting all the things you can feel grateful for and the successes you’ve had.
  2. If your manager asks you how you are, what would it do for your career if you mentioned a success? For example, “Great, I’ve just finished that project on time and I’ve learned a lot from working on it.”
  3. If your client asks how you are, how much more confidence would they have in you if you responded with a success? Or how much more would they enjoy working with you if you said, “Great, I really enjoyed working on that project you gave us.” They may even have more projects like that to give you or have contacts they could refer you to.
  4. If your friend or lover asks how you are, talk about something good that’s happened that you are happy about. Or mention something about them you are grateful for. Positivity attracts and sparks off positivity.
  5. If someone at a business networking meeting asks you how you are, talk about a success. They may have contacts who need someone like you.
  6. If your employee or team member asks how you are, mention a success, or something you are looking forward to, or something you appreciate about them. What would that do for team morale?
  7. If ‘Fine’ really stands for ‘Feeling Inwardly Negative Everyday’, choose the right person and the right moment to share your difficulties with; it could be your manager, coach, a family member, a colleague. Do it in a constructive way and choose a person who is skilled at problem solving.
  8. When we respond positively and say upbeat things we actually feel more positive and confident. Use the opportunity of someone asking how you are to jump into a more positive and confident mood.

So,  how are you, really?

What’s your next step to making your personal and working life richer and more successful?

Discover some ideas below.
